LEESANG ART SPACE presents Hwang Jae-won's solo exhibition "FFanG’s World."
This exhibition provides an opportunity to explore and take a look into to the the imaginative inner world of rising female artists. It introduces a total of 38 paintings, sculptures and installation works, including new works specially prepared for this exhibition as well as representative works featuring the colors and imagination unique to the artist. Through this exhibition, LEESANG ART SPACE examines the creative world of talented young artists and arranges a special space to understand the perspectives and trends of the contemporary art world. The realm of "FFanG's World," painted by Hwang Jae-won, lies between reality and imagination. This world is not a perfect fantasy, but rather an imaginary world in your daily life that appears when you close your eyes for a moment and vanishes when you open them. The artist explains that such a brief moment of imagination brings her happiness and hopes that, through her work, people have the chance to feel this moment she describes so as to rest their weary minds and bodies with the brief respite offered by an imaginary break. The protagonist "FfanG" of "FFanG's World" is a self-portrait of the artist as a little girl. Hwang Jae-won expressed her inner life by inserting her self-portrait into the world within her artworks and telling the story about the border between everyday reality and imagination. It is the artist's own self from the time in her life she felt happiest that became the protagonist of "FFanG's World." This little girl protagonist unravels her story from within her world. When preparing her work, the artist disliked her house and felt as through the mundane repetition of her daily life left her arid. The brief imaginations that occurred within her daily life brought her some sort of joy and the rough scribbles from this period became a blend of everyday life an

The world the artist describes can be understood as one foot of reality within a world of fantasy. Therefore, some of her works portray her daily reality, while others are reflections of her imagination. Although she focused on works portraying her daily life in the early half of 2017, the more prominent works among the 15+ new pieces introduced through this exhibition portray animals she has met in this sweet imaginary world. Hwang Jae-won was able to experiment extensively in her work because she studied a wide range of mediums, including ceramics, metalwork, lacquerwork, and textiles) by majoring in applied arts. After agonizing over how make "FFanG's World" relatable to her audiences, she chose to use the medium of ceramics for its relatively free and expressive form and color. At first, the artist created paintings with dolls affixed to its surface, but in early 2017, mainly worked on ceramics, drawings on boards, and small mixed media. These types of works were the result of her experience working with different media. In fact, this exhibit includes new experimental work. This work was made by digitizing a hand-drawn drawing and printing it onto a canvas. After synthesizing the drawing through the computer and printing it, the artist retouches it with acrylics by hand. Furthermore, she has prepared a site-specific work for the exhibition space at LEESANG ART SPACE: a fun construction made of sheets meant to lead visitors into the exhibition space from the the stairs to the gallery entrance.

Hwang Jae-won (b.1984) is a promising up-and-coming artist who has been active in the areas of crafts and ceramics. She graduated from Sookmyung Women's University in 2008 with a degree in applied arts (crafts), and earned a MA in ceramics from the same university's graduate school in 2017. Her major works include "FFanG's World" (2017), "FFanG's Room" (2017), "Handbag Series" (2015), "Box Series" (2015), and "Teapot Series" (2015). The artist has exhibited her art in solo and group exhibitions held at leading domestic and foreign organizations, including the Yeoju World Ceramic Biennale Yeoju Theme Exhibition (2017), the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism & the Korean Culture and Arts Commission Art Terminal Section 4 (2017), Japan's Kino Shokikaku (2015), and the Milal Museum (2015). In addition, she has a record of winning six bronze medals at the 2010 Doll Competition and winning the second New Generation award at 36.5°Ceramic in 2008.

이상아트스페이스는 황재원의 개인전 <FFanG’s World 빵스 월드>을 개최한다.

이번 전시는 기대주 여성 신진 작가의 내면적 세계를 탐구하고 상상 세계를 들어다 볼 수 있는 기회를 제공한다. 황재원 작가의 작품 특유의 화려한 색감과 상상력이 돋보이는 대표작들과 이번 전시를 위해 작업한 신작을 포함한 회화, 조각, 설치 작품 총 38여 점이 소개될 예정이다. 이상아트스페이스는 이번 전시를 통해 역량을 갖춘 신진 작가의 작품 세계를 주의 깊게 살펴보고, 동시대 젊은 미술계의 관점과 동향을 파악할 수 있는 소중한 장을 마련할 예정이다.

황재원이 그린 <FFanG’s World 빵스 월드> 세계는 현실과 상상 그 중간 경계에 존재한다. 그 세계는 완벽한 판타지가 아닌 일상에서 잠깐 눈을 감으면 떠오르고, 눈을 뜨면 사라져 버리는 상상 속 세계이다. 그녀는 이런 짧은 상상이 행복감을 안겨준다고 말하며 사람들이 자신이 작품을 보면서 자신이 말하고자 하는 상상의 순간을 함께 느끼며 잠깐의 상상이 주는 휴식을 통해 일상에서의 지친 심신을 위로하기를 바란다.

<FFanG’s World 빵스 월드> 속 주인공 빵(FFanG)은 소녀의 모습을 한 작가의 자화상이다. 황재원은 작품 속 세계에 자화상을 넣어 표현하는 방식을 통해 자신의 내면을 표현하고, 일상과 상상의 경계를 이야기 한다. 그녀가 가장 행복했던 그 시절의 자신이 <FFanG’s World 빵스 월드> 이야기의 주인공이 되었고, 그 주인공 소녀는 자신의 세계관 안에서 이야기를 풀어낸다. 그녀가 작품을 준비할 당시 그녀는 집이 너무나도 싫었고, 일상의 반복은 그녀 자신을 메마르게 하는 것 같다고 느꼈다고 한다. 그런 일상에서 떠올리는 짧은 상상은 어떠한 행복감을 안겨주었고 당시에 끄적거리던 낙서는 일상과 상상이 혼합된 작품으로 승화되었다. 그녀가 이야기하는 세계는 현실에 발을 담근 상상이라고 볼 수 있다. 따라서 그녀의 작품들 중에는 일상이 두드러지는 작업도 있고, 상상의 모습이 먼저 보이는 작업도 있다. 2017년 초기에는 일상을 표현하는 작업을 주로 했지만 이번 전시를 통해 선보이는 15점이 넘는 신작 중 두드러지는 작품들은 주로 달콤한 상상 세계에서 만난 동물을 표현한 작품들이다.

황재원은 공예를 전공하며 다양한 분야(도자, 금속, 목칠, 섬유)를 배워 작품에 다양한 시도를 해볼 수 있었다. <FFanG’s World 빵스 월드>를 어떻게 공감 가도록 보여줄 수 있을 지에 대한 고민을 거듭한 끝에 비교적 형태와 색감을 자유롭게 나타낼 수 있는 도자와 페인팅을 활용한 방식을 택했다. 초반엔 페인팅에 인형을 부조로 붙인 작품을 만들기도 했는데 2017년 상반기에는 도자 작업을 주로 했고 도판에 그림을 그리고 작은 합 등을 만들었다. 이러한 작업들은 그녀의 다양한 분야에 대한 경험에서 나올 수 있었다. 이번 전시에서 새롭게 시도한 방식도 있다. 실제 그린 드로잉을 컴퓨터로 작업해 캔버스에 출력하는 작업이다. 드로잉을 컴퓨터로 합성, 조합하고 프린팅한 후 실제 아크릴로 리터칭한 작품을 선보인다. 또한 작가가 이번에 이상아트스페이스 전시 공간을 위해 준비한 것이 있다. 이상아트스페이스의 계단에서 입구까지 내려오는 공간에 재미 있는 시트 시공을 하는 것인데 이를 통해 관객들을 전시 공간으로 이끌 것이다.

황재원(b.1984)은 공예, 도자 분야에서 활발한 활동을 펼치고 있는 촉망 받는 신진 작가이다. 2008년 숙명여자대학교 미술대학 공예과를 졸업하고, 2017년 동 대학원 조형예술학과에서 도자 전공으로 석사 학위를 취득했다. 주요 작품으로는 <FFanG’s_World>(2017), <FFanG’s Room>(2017), <Handbag Series>(2015), <Box Series>(2015), <Teapot Series>(2015) 등이 있다. 작가는 여주세계도자비엔날레 여주 주제전(2017), 문체부&한국문화예술위원회 아트터미널섹션 4(2017), 일본 키노쇼키카쿠(2015), 밀알미술관(2015) 등 국내외 유수의 기관에서 열린 개인전과 그룹전에서 작품을 선보인 바 있다. 이외에도 2010년 인형공모대전에서 6가지의 표현 동상을 수상하고 2008년 36.5°Ceramic 에서 제 2회 뉴제너레이션 입선한 이력이 있다.
