LEESANG ART SPACE holds a solo exhibition "Way Home" by artist Jeong Yeon-ji from Thursday, May 10, 2018 to Monday, May 28. The exhibition introduces a total of 33 paintings, including 27 new artworks. LEESANG ART SPACE wants to present a gift-like exhibition for people to reflect upon the meaning of happiness and "home" in the May, which marks the green Month of Family.

The title of the exhibition, "Way Home," is the name of the work and the landscape she captured every day. It collects gaps and overlaps created by time as well as disappearing landscapes by entering the delicate relationship and boundaries of everyday life. These collected images are chosen by the artist on a particular day and are hidden so that they are not discarded and chosen in the process of reinventing. Through this filtered structure of the surrounding landscape, the artist conveys to the audience the feelings we felt in the space we often pass by. It captures images drifting in dim memories in unclear time and space, with a landscape that is likely to stand out with a thick but unclear black outline on the shades of gray. 

It overlaps the thinly burned pigment several times to form the base of the screen. The base material is mainly used for triad and cotton cloth, which contains rough traces of the pigment and the breathing of the brush. The stillness and scenery that become the main characters of the scene are drawn in one stroke and wiped off again roughly. This process is repeated several times and simultaneously synthesizes with the background. Using a vague shroud and a quick brushstroke that creates a gap between material and material, images that are not clear like those drifting in memory are made several times. Among the changing images of the canvas, the artist decides on her own at some point. The finished work seems to be incomplete due to its ambiguous shape and its revealing texture. 

These scenes are a faded image of memories, an unpredictable image of tomorrow, and a self-portrait of today.

Why is the word 'real' used negatively in modern times, and is accepted again? "Today," "The Way Home," "Right Now," that's the reality, and now going home can be a happy reality. Through the work, the artist wants to tell the story of the reality in which an entity that is bound to be incomplete forever lives nevertheless. It calmly observes the scenes of time that endure with hope and draws visitors into the space and time. The process of recreating the landscape through an understated and filtered initiative will be a kind of journey for the writer and a heart-wrenching landscape for someone living alone.

Jeong Yeon-ji (b.1984), who was selected for the 2013 Women Writer Wings Project contest, followed her father, a novelist, from place to place, and naturally encountered writing and painting. He majored in Oriental painting and pottery glass at Hongik University's College of Fine Arts, graduated from the Department of Oriental Painting at the Graduate School of General Studies, and is currently attending a Ph.D. course in Oriental Painting at the Graduate School. Starting with the group exhibition in 2010, the company has been actively engaged in works and exhibitions in Korea and China every year. It was selected for a project to support art creation activities hosted by the Seoul Cultural Foundation in 2015, and currently houses works at the Government Art Bank, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade and the Suwon Cultural Foundation.

이상아트스페이스는 2018월 5월 10일 목요일부터 5월 28일 월요일까지 작가 정연지의 개인전 <집으로 가는 길(Way Home)>展을 개최한다. 이번 전시는 정연지 작가의 처음 선보이게 될 신작 27점을 포함한 회화 작품 총 33점이 소개될 예정이다. 이상아트스페이스는 푸르른 5월 가정의 달을 맞아 지쳐있는 현대인들에게 일상이 주는 행복과 ‘집’의 의미를 되새겨보는 선물 같은 전시를 선보이고자 한다.

전시의 타이틀인 ‘집으로 가는 길(Way Home)’은 작품명이자 그녀가 매일 같이 호흡하며 포착해낸 풍경이다. 일상에서 느껴지는 미묘한 사이와 경계 속으로 들어가 공간을 연결하는 틈, 시간이 만들어내는 중첩, 사라지는 풍경들을 채집한다. 이렇게 채집된 이미지들은 특정한 날 작가에 의해 선택되고 재구상하는 과정에서 버려질 것과 선택할 것이 가려진다. 이렇게 여과를 거친 주변 풍경의 구조를 통해 작가는 우리가 흔히 지나쳤던 공간에서 느낀 감정을 다시금 관람객들에게 오롯이 전달한다. 회색 계열의 색조에 굵지만 그 경계가 뚜렷하지 않은 검정 윤곽선이 도드라져 보일 듯 말 듯한 풍경과 불분명한 시공간 안에서 희미한 추억 속을 표류하는 이미지들을 포착해 보여준다. 

묽게 탄 안료를 여러 번 중첩해 화면의 바탕을 만들어 낸다. 바탕재가 되는 것은 주로 3합 장지와 결이 느껴지는 면천을 사용하는데, 이러한 바탕재는 안료의 거친 흔적과 붓질의 호흡을 담아내기 때문이다. 장면의 주인공이 되는 정물과 풍경은 한 획에 그려내고 다시 거칠게 닦아낸다. 이러한 과정은 수 차례 반복되며 동시에 바탕과 조화를 이루게 한다. 물질과 물질 사이 시간의 격차가 만들어 내는 모호한 장막과 재빠르게 운용되는 붓을 이용해 기억 속을 표류하듯 뚜렷하지 않은 이미지가 여러 번 완성된다. 스치듯 변화하는 화면의 모습 중 작가는 어느 시점에서 완성된 화면을 스스로 결정한다. 완성된 작품은 흔들리는 듯 형체가 모호하고 결이 드러나는 바탕으로 인해 불완전해 보인다. 이러한 장면들은 희미해진 추억 속의 모습이기도 하고 예측할 수 없는 내일의 모습임과 동시에 오늘의 자화상이 되기도 한다.

현대에 와서 ‘현실’이라는 단어는 왜 부정적으로 쓰여지며, 또 받아들여질까? ‘오늘’, ‘집으로 가는 길’, ‘바로 지금’, 그것이 현실이며, 집으로 가는 지금이 행복한 현실이 될 수 있다. 작가는 작업을 통해 영원히 불완전할 수 밖에 없는 존재가 그럼에도 불구하고 살아가는 그 현실의 이야기를 하고자 한다. 희망을 가지고 견뎌내는 이 시간의 풍경들을 최대한 담담하게 관조하며 관람객을 그 시공간으로 끌어들인다. 풍경을 절제되고 여과된 구상을 통해 재현하는 작업의 과정은 작가에게 일종의 여정이 되고 외로운 단독자로 살아가는 누군가에게는 마음 가는 풍경이 될 것이다.

2013년 여성작가 날개 달기 프로젝트 공모에 선정되었던 정연지 작가(b.1984)는 어린 시절, 소설가인 아버지를 따라 이곳 저곳을 함께 따라다니며 자연스럽게 글과 그림을 접하게 되었다. 홍익대학교 미술대학 동양화와 도예 유리를 전공하고, 동 대학교 일반대학원 동양화과를 졸업했으며, 현재 동 대학원 동양화전공 박사과정에 재학 중이다. 2010년 그룹전을 시작으로 현재까지 한국과 중국에서 매년 활발하게 작품, 전시활동을 진행해오고 있다. 2015년 서울문화재단이 주최한 예술창작활동 지원사업에 선정되었으며, 현재 정부미술은행과 외교통상부, 수원 문화재단 등에서 작품을 소장하고 있다.
