NIDANA: Kim Hye-jung SOLO EXHIBITION

LEESANG ART SPACE hosts Kim Hye-jung's solo exhibition "NIDANA." "Nidana," the Sanskrit word for "causation/relationship" is Kim Hye Jung's first exhibition. Kim has been working as a music composer in Japan and so this art exhibition represents a new venture in translating her musical compositions into pictorial form. The exhibit introduces a total of 15 artworks that construct the emotion of rhythm and melody into 2-D. Through "NIDANA," LEESANG ART SPACE offers a space to examine the creative works of rising female artists and to confirm the connection between music and art from a new pictorial perspective of music. Kim Hye-jung's work conveys the affect (emotion) of sound through the language of color. Upon releasing her composed music upon a flat surface or transferring her writings to a flat surface, she repeats this process of expressing through music. Going beyond the simple concept of reproducing 3D scenes into 2-D,  her process is about converting dynamic emotions into visual and static emotions. Melody and rhythm become lines and colors that convey the author's message. "Humans' twelve relationships. Twelve nidanas. Everything in this world is connected through nidanas." This is the basic doctrine of Buddhism and the message that Kim Hye-jung seeks to convey through this exhibition. We do not realize the importance of many relationships that pass by in our lives. In the work, the author tells of tens of thousands of relationships that have been made since before each person was born. The author explains that in the samsara concept of endless cycle of life and death, relationships become the chain that links the past, present, and future. In this wheel wherein the past life's relationships becomes those in the present life, what is of importance is the human will to create relationships. The door, which appears often in her works, symbolizes the will to create a relationship and its r

One can open the door with one's will and move on to a new world or one can settle for the current state by not opening the door. In addition, the artist represents the evil and greed of humans as insects, and also reasons that there are values that people should not forget when living in the present. Ajahn Brahm, a world-renowned meditator and British Buddhist monk said, "Allow everything to go with its natural flow. Everything changes, and things are seen according to the heart. If the heart is still, it can see through things." Hopefully, audiences will realize the importance of the universe's logic and relationships within the surface created by the artist through "NIDANA" and experience the affect of music reconstructed with the artistic sense of a rising female artist. While running an educational institution and a research center, Kim Hye-jung studies creative music for children and makes art related to music. Based on her opinion that the current method of music education, which is fundamentally difficult, ought to change, Kim works to lead music education towards unique methods of performance and connect it to various artistic and physical activities. Guest curator Lee Hee-kyung, who organized this exhibition, led various cultural and artistic projects at major educational institutions in Korea and also organized the art education program. The exhibit's opening reception is Thursday, Sept. 28 (8pm-9pm)

이상아트스페이스는 김혜정의 개인전 <NIDANA> 展을 개최한다.

산스크리트어로 ‘인연’을 뜻하는 <NIDANA> 展은 김혜정의 첫 전시로, 일본에서 작곡가로 활동해 온 그녀가 자신의 음악을 평면에 구현한 작품들로 새롭게 도약하는 전시이다. 리듬과 선율의 감동을 이차원에 구성한 평면 작품 총 15점이 이번 전시에서 소개될 예정이다. 이상아트스페이스는 <NIDANA> 展을 통해 여성 신진 작가의 작품 세계를 주의 깊게 살펴보고, 음악의 회화적 관점에서 음악과 미술의 교감을 확인할 수 있는 장을 마련한다.
 
김혜정의 작업은 색채 언어로 소리의 감동을 전한다. 그녀는 자신이 작곡한 음악을 평면에 풀어내거나, 자신이 쓴 글을 평면에 옮긴 뒤, 음악으로 표현하는 과정을 반복한다. 이는 단순히 삼차원의 장면을 이차원에 재현하는 개념을 넘어 동적인 감동을 시각적, 정적 감동으로 변환하는 과정이다. 선율과 리듬이 선과 색이 되어 작가의 메시지를 전한다.
 
"인간의 열 두 가지 인연. ‘십이인연(十二因緣)’. 이 생의 모든 건 인연으로 연결된다.” 불교의 기본 교리이자 김혜정이 이번 전시를 통해 전하고자 하는 메세지이다. 우리는 살아가며 스쳐가는 많은 인연들의 소중함을 깨닫지 못한다. 작가는 작품에서 각자가 태어나기 이전부터 맺어온 수만 가지의 인연을 이야기한다. 끝없는 생과 사를 이야기하는 윤회 사상에서 인연은 과거, 현재, 미래를 긴밀히 연결하는 매개체가 된다, 전생의 인연이 현재의 인연이 되는 수레바퀴에서 중요한 건 인연을 만들어 가는 인간의 의지라고 작가는 말한다. 그녀의 작품에서 자주 등장하는 ‘문’은 인연을 만들어가는 의지와 그에 따른 결과물을 의미한다. 인간의 의지로 문을 열고 인연을 만들며 새로운 세상으로 나아갈 수도 있고, 문을 열지 않고 현재의 상태에 안주할 수도 있다. 또, 작가는 인간의 악한 마음, 욕심을 벌레로 표현하며, 인간이 현재를 살아가며 잊지 말아야 할 가치에 대해서도 사유한다.
       
“모든 일을 자연스레 흘러가도록 두라. 모든 것은 변하고, 내 마음에 따라 사물이 보인다. 내 마음이 고요하면 사물을 꿰뚫어 볼 수 있다.” 세계적으로 유명한 명상가이자, 영국의 불교 승려 아잔 브람 스님이 말했다. 관객들이 <NIDANA> 展을 통해 작가가 구현한 화면 안에서 우주의 이치와 인연의 소중함을 깨닫고 여성 신진 작가의 회화적 감각으로 재구성된 음악의 감동을 확인하길 바란다.
 
김혜정은 교육기관과 연구소를 운영하며 아이들을 위한 창작 음악과 음악과 관련된 창작 그림을 그리고 연구한다. 김혜정은 근본적으로 어렵고 힘든 음악교육이 기존의 방식과 달라져야 한다고 생각하며 음악교육이 독특한 연주 방식과 다양한 미술활동과 신체활동으로 연결될 수 있도록 돕고 있다.
 
이번 전시를 기획한 이희경 객원 큐레이터는 국내 주요 교육 기관에서 다양한 문화예술 프로젝트를 진행하며, 예술교육 프로그램을 기획한 바 있다.

오프닝 리셉션은 9월 28일 목요일 오후 8시부터 9시까지이다.
