Exhibition : The FLOW 

SOLO EXHIBITION by Haedam Baek Yoonah

LEESANG ART SPACE will hold a solo exhibition of writer Haedam Baek Yoonah from Saturday, March 10, 2018 to Wednesday, March 28, 2018. The exhibition will feature a total of 15 paintings, including the new "Flow" series, which will be showcased for the first time by writer Haedam Baek Yoonah. Through this exhibition, LEESANG ART SPACE examines the new perspective of a new female artist and the world view of her work, and provides a space for reasons and healing for tired modern people.
 
This exhibition mainly features major works of the "Paradise" series, which has a dreamy atmosphere with warm emotions unique to the artist and, the works that can be viewed from various angles, including a new series that has distinctly different colors from the previous ones. The new series consists of another series of works of "Paradise" and the works in the process of finding the reason for her existence and longing for freedom she expresses in a new way. The way she worked on the new series is very different from the previous works and they also give very different feelings. The "flow" series is a medium and a series of processes that allow her to take a step closer to freedom, the artist says.
 
The title of the exhibition, "Flow," is literally due to the "flowing" itself. Rather than a noticeable flow, it is a flow created by the color palette used, and the choice of color is also not constrained , following the free will pursued by the artist, but works according to the flow of feeling on that day, adding to its meaning. According to the artist, the flow within each work is important, but she wanted to show the overall flow in a bigger picture. Therefore, the large flow shown when the works were arranged side by side in a row was not kept, but rather focused on the meaning of the flow and allowed the audience to recognize and understand what the artist was aiming for.

She wanted to express her longing for freedom through the work. The artist enjoyed upmost freedom by painting fish in her early works and even though fish became a medium of longing for freedom, but she rather felt trapped again in the framework of "fish artist" and realization of  the horror in the chainability of restriction which gave her another chance to gain another new answer: "flow." In a way, the "Flow" series is a reinterpretation of the author's previous works and a mature attitude toward her own life.
 
In the new works, the characteristic of the work style that Haedam Baek Yoonah shows is touch. As countless scales on the canvas surface suggest, the scales are expressed in brush touches with direction and rhythm, making the yearning for a particular subject a little further from the bright side shown in previous works and a much deeper and profound theme. 
 
This represents the author's life that goes beyond mere "freedom" and presents a new direction to the author's view of life, 
with realization the calmness and softness of from afar is just a collection of countless confusions of pain and grief when she gets closer and closer to her life. 
This exhibition is the first time to unveil 12 new works by Haedam Baek Yoonah, and it is expected that it will bring freshness to the viewers and make them more deeply understand and sympathize with the changed world of her works.
 
After attending the Paris Clothing Association (ECSCP) in France, Haedam Baek Yoona changed major and studied fine arts in Parsons College in New York, USA.  She has a history of winning a special award at the "Korea Creative Culture and Arts Awards" hosted by the Central Committee of the Korean Press Association in 2017 and the grand prize at the "World Culture and Arts Exchange Awards" hosted by the same organizer.

She held her first group exhibition when he was a student in New York, and has actively showing her artworks at domestic and foreign institutions, galleries and art fairs over the past 15 years. She was called the “Fish Artist”  with her "Paradise" series introduced in 2016 and has received much love domestically , with some of its works currently stored in the National Assembly. Her art merchandise is being sold actively online.

이상아트스페이스는 2018년 3월 10일 토요일부터 3월 28일 수요일까지 작가 해담 백윤아의 개인전 <흐름>展을 개최한다. 이번 전시는 해담 백윤아 작가의 처음 선보이게 될 신작 “흐름” 시리즈를 포함한 회화 작품 총 15점이 소개될 예정이다. 이상아트스페이스는 본 전시를 통해 여성 신진작가의 새로운 시각과 작품 세계관을 살펴보고 지쳐있는 우리 현대인에게 필요한 사유와 치유의 공간을 제공한다.

이번 전시는 작가 특유의 몽환적인 분위기에 따뜻한 감성이 묻어 나오는 “낙원”시리즈의 대표작과, 이전 작품들과는 그 색채가 확연하게 다른 신작 시리즈까지 다각도로 관람이 가능한 작품들이 주를 이룬다. 

신작 시리즈는 “낙원”의 또 다른 연작이자 그녀가 새로운 방식으로 표출하는 자유에 대한 동경과 존재의 이유를 찾는 과정을 표현한 작품들로 이루어져있다. 기존 작업들과는 매우 다른 형태로 작업됐으며, 다른 느낌의 작업들이기도 하다. “흐름” 시리즈는 그녀로 하여금 자유에 한 발자국 더 다가가게 해주는 매개체이자 일련의 과정이라고 작가는 전한다. 

전시의 타이틀인 “흐름”은 그 의미 그대로 ‘흘러감’ 그 자체에 기인한다. 눈에 띄는 흐름보다는 사용된 컬러팔레트로 인한 흐름으로, 색상의 선택 또한 작가가 추구하는 자유의지대로 구속 받지 않고, 그 날 그 기분에 따라 느낌의 흐름대로 작업해 더욱 그 의미를 가중시킨다. 작가의 말에 의하면 각각의 작품 안에서의 흐름도 중요하지만 전체적인 큰 흐름을 보여주고자 했다고 한다. 그리하여 작품들을 일렬로 나란히 배치했을 때 보여지는 그 큰 흐름을 형상화해 머물지 않고 항상 흘러가는 그 의미에 초점을 두고 작가가 지향하는 바를 관객들로 하여금 인지하고 이해할 수 있도록 했다. 

그녀는 이번 작업을 통해 ‘자유에 대한 갈망에 대한 동경’을 표현하고자 했다. 초기 작품들에서 물고기들을 그리며 자유를 만끽했던 작가는 물고기가 자유에 대한 갈망의 매개체가 되어주었지만, ‘물고기 작가’라는 틀에 또다시 갇혀 구속의 연쇄성이 지닌 공포를 깨닫고 다시 한번 더 도약할 수 있는 또 하나의 새로운 답, 즉 ‘흐름’을 얻은 것이다. 어떻게 보면 “흐름” 시리즈는 작가 본인의 이전 작품들에 대한 재해석이자 그녀 자신의 인생을 바라보는 성숙해진 관점의 태도라고 할 수 있겠다. 

신작에서 해담 백윤아가 보여주는 작업방식의 특징은 바로, 터치감이다. 캔버스 표면에 무수히 많은 비늘들이 암시하듯, 그 비늘들을 방향성과 율동성을 가진 붓 터치로 표현해, 특정 대상에 대한 동경이 이전 작품들에서 보여진 밝은 면에서 조금 더 나아가 훨씬 더 깊이 있고 심도 있는 주제로 전환되었다고 볼 수 있다. 이 점이 작가가 말하고자 하는 논제 즉, 단순히 ‘자유로움’을 넘어서 작가의 인생관에 새로운 방향성을 제시함과 동시에, 멀리서 바라보았을 때의 고요함과 부드러움이 가까이 다가가면 갈수록 셀 수 없는 고통과 슬픔으로 점철된 수 많은 혼돈들이 모여 이루어진 작가의 인생이라는 것을 대변한다.

이번 전시는 해담 백윤아의 신작 12점을 처음 공개하는 자리이자, 이전 대표작들과 한자리에 함께 전시되어 보는 이로 하여금 신선함을 안겨주고 확연하게 달라진 그녀의 작품세계를 좀 더 깊이 이해하고 공감할 수 있게 만들어 줄 것이라고 기대한다.

해담 백윤아 작가는 프랑스 파리 의상조합(ECSCP)을 다니다가, 전향해 미국 뉴욕 파슨스 미술대학교에서 순수미술을 전공했다. 2017년 한국 언론사협회 중앙회에서 주최한 ‘대한민국 창조 문화예술대상’에서 특별상을, 같은 주최의 ‘세계 문화예술 교류 대상’에서 대상을 수상한 이력이 있다. 뉴욕에서 재학시절 첫 단체전을 열었고, 그로부터 지난 15여 년간 국내외 기관 및 갤러리, 아트 페어에서 활발하게 작업을 선보였다. 2016년에 소개한 “낙원” 시리즈로 ‘물고기 작가’라고 불리며 국내에서 많은 사랑을 받았으며, 현재 작품 중 일부는 국회의사당 의원실에 보관되어 있다. 온라인상에서도 아트상품을 활발하게 판매 중이다.
