PUZZLE - The memory#15 展

LEESANG ART SPACE holds Kim Soo-yeon's solo exhibition "Puzzle – the Memory #15" from Oct. 12, 2018 to Oct. 20, 2018.

The exhibition will feature a series of works from the memory series, featuring more than eight paintings, including the artist's signature works. Artist Kim Soo-yeon will present her first installation work at this exhibition. Her memory series paintings are already drawing attention online, and many art collectors are showing interest because she will showcase her first installation at the Puzzle – the Memory #15.
 
Through "Puzzle – the Memory #15," LEESANG ART SPACE will set up an exhibition where female artists of Jeju Island can go beyond their local and gender limitations and become artists who communicate with the public their works.

The artist's work began with her obsession of "must remember" because of the vague fear that she could lose her sense of sight. Her work, expressed through her established process for making "Memory Puzzle" by separating the image's surface following the line of the shadow and then dividing the height based on the differences in color, looks like a picture from a distance, but from up closer, appears like an image broken up into small pieces and expresses the method of memory reconstruction without hesitation. 

 The message that the artist wants to convey through this exhibition is that she wants to hold onto the forgotten memories through her works and provide the audience with an opportunity to immerse themselves in their own dim memories. This exhibition, which depicts the memories of everyday life and memory as images, guides exhibition visitors to reproduce memories that can disappear beyond memories. Furthermore, she records herself through her work and communicates with the public to overcome her trauma and perform her developmental work.

We record with the medium called photography to reminisce about the past, or to capture separated memories in full form. However, photos do not contain subjective feelings and images in a person's memory. The author expresses the memory and complex subtle feelings divided into several pieces using enamel texture, similar to that of a photograph. 
 
Her process of matching pieces of memory is neither unilateral nor coercive. 
In front of time, the principle of nature, she simply shows us an opportunity to think about the importance of everyday life and the value of unforgettable memories thought her artworks by putting layers of separated memory pieces together through a brush.

One of the famous Latin sayings goes, "Time runs away, but memories don't." Time goes on, but memories stay with us forever. Whether it's a happy or painful moment, I hope it will be a time to think again about a moment that has special meaning, not a time that flows mundanely. 
 
Kim Soo-yeon, a female artist from Jeju Island, graduated from Jeju National University's Department of Western Painting in 2015 and is currently a Ph.D. student at Hongik University's Department of Painting, and many of her artworks are privately owned by the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Gangbuk Samsung Hospital and Youngwoo Joint Law Office. 
 
She was awarded a first prize in Jeju Art Exhibition in Western Painting along with many other awards and she has been active as a full-time artist  by engaging in a number of solo and group exhibitions.

이상아트스페이스는 2018년 10월 12일부터 2018년 10월 20일까지 김수연 작가의 개인전 <Puzzle – the memory #15>展을 개최한다.

이번 전시는 기억 시리즈의 연작으로 진행되며, 그녀의 대표작을 포함한 8점 이상의 회화 작품이 전시된다. 김수연 작가는 이번 전시에서 최초의 설치 작품을 선보인다. 그녀의 기억 시리즈 회화 작품은 이미 온라인 상에 뜨거운 관심을 모으고 있는 상태이며 이번 <Puzzle – the memory #15>展에서 최초 설치 작품을 선보이기 때문에 많은 아트컬렉터들의 관심이 한 몸에 받고 있다. 

이상아트스페이스는 <Puzzle – the memory #15>展을 통해 제주도 여성작가가 가진 지역적, 젠더적 한계를 뛰어 넘어, 작품으로 대중과 소통하는 작가로 거듭 날 수 있는 전시를 펼칠 수 있는 장을 마련한다.

작가의 작업은 시력을 잃을 수 있다는 막연한 공포로 인해 ‘기억해야 한다’라는 강박 관념에서부터 출발했다. 그림자에 따라 화면 이미지를 분리한 뒤 색의 차이로 높낮이를 나누어 ‘기억의 퍼즐’을 맞추는 과정으로 정립해 표현한 그녀의 작품은 멀리서 바라보면 사진처럼 보이지만 가까이서 보면 여러 조각으로 나누어지는 이미지로 나타나면서 <기억의 재구성> 방법을 가감 없이 표현했다.

작가는 본인의 작품으로 인해 잊혀 가는 기억을 붙들고, 관객들에게 각자가 지니고 있는 자신만의 아련한 추억 속으로 잠길 수 있는 기회를 제공하고자 하는 것이 이번 전시를 통해 전하고자 하는 메시지이다. 인상 깊은 기억. 혹은 일상, 기억 한편에 머물던 추억을 이미지로 형상화시킨 이번 전시는 전시장을 찾는 관객들에게 추억 속으로 사라질 수 있는 기억을 재생산 할 수 있도록 안내한다. 나아가 그녀는 작업을 통해 작가자신을 기록하며, 대중과 소통해 자신의 트라우마를 극복하며 발전적인 작업을 해나아 간다.

우리는 과거를 추억하기 위해, 혹은 분리되는 기억을 온전한 형태로 붙잡기 위해 사진이라는 매개체로 기록한다. 하지만 사진은 사람의 기억에 담긴 주관적 감정과 이미지를 담지 못한다. 작가는 여러 조각들로 나누어진 기억과 복잡 미묘한 감정을 사진과 비슷한 에나멜 질감을 사용해 섬세하게 표현한다. 그녀가 기억의 조각들을 맞추는 과정은 일방적이지도 강압적이지도 않다. 그저 작품을 통해 시간이란 자연의 순리 앞에 붓을 통해 분리된 기억의 조각들을 한 겹 한 겹 올리며 쉽사리 찾아오는 망각으로 인한 기억의 분리를 막고 일상의 소중함과 잊지 말아야 할 추억이라는 가치에 대해 생각할 수 있는 기회를 제시한다.

"Tempus fugit, non autem memoria."

라틴 명언 중 ‘시간은 도망가지만, 추억은 그렇지 않다’라는 말이 있다. 시간은 계속 흐르지만 추억은 우리 곁에 영원히 머물러 있는다. 더없이 행복한 순간이든, 힘들고 고통스러운 순간이든 일상적으로 흐르는 시간이 아닌 특별한 의미를 가지는 순간에 대해 다시금 생각할 수 있는 시간이 되기를 바란다.

김수연은 제주도 출신 여성 작가로 2015년 제주대학교 서양화과를 졸업하고 현재 홍익대학교 회화과 박사과정 재학 중에 있으며 국립현대미술관, 강북 삼성 병원, 영우 합동 법률 사무소 외 다수의 작품이 개인 소장되어 있다. 또한 제주도 미술 대전 서양화 부분에서 특상을 받는 등 많은 수상 경험 이력이 있으며 다수의 개인전과 단체전 활동을 하며 꾸준히 전업 작가로서의 면모를 보여주고 있다.
