<2018 신진 작가 공모전> 

LEESANG ART SPACE is holding Soonj’s private exhibition “Life Is An Art”  from Wednesday, February 7, 2018, to Monday, February 26, 2018.  

The exhibition will feature installation works that attach meaning to the value of ordinary daily life and paintings drawn on a flat surface. Life is ART wants to provide a place to appreciate that happiness comes from daily life, not something special and that all life can be a part of art.

In this exhibition, a total of six works will be introduced with paintings that will draw attention for their various colors ranging from high-profile to low-profile and her unique brushstrokes, and installation works which will cover the exhibition space with mixed media.

Soonji's works were introduced and expressed in the painting with her own meaning in everyday life, where various emotions such as the past and present, life and death, and the cycle of four seasons coexist together through the rhythm of nature and repeated and changing patterns. Painting people's relaxed lines and ordinary everyday life, she feels that romance and art exist in mundane everyday life which is often considered boring and ordinary. 

Although the reality seen close by could be a tragedy it can be a comedy from a distance, and it is a process of work that many people can sympathize with, reminding the natural sense of life that daily life that has not felt special can be a memory that evokes longing emotions when looking back over the years. The artist quickly edits the happy memories of the past into pictures. She also paints his own stories and emotions from seeing and feeling people. 

Sometimes emotions are expressed in hand gestures or body language even if people don't use words or facial expressions, and they paint the various psychology and emotions that individuals have by looking at the shape or gesture of their hands. 

And in the artwork, several paintings overlap to complete the painting like a memory. The brushstrokes in the artist Soonji's works, which are bold yet delicate, and a rational expression in the work makes it interesting for viewers. Living in small happiness and triviality is what makes you an art piece.

Blue color, which is mainly shown in the paintings, is one of the colors favored and affectionate by not only many artists but also ordinary people, as it said in Goethe's color study that the symbolism represented by blue is varied, with Janusic properties showing both a fresh image of hope and a dark and gloomy image as a symbol of stability and peace. 

The artist also says that life is similar to the image shown in blue. All happy memories exist because of sad memories. It seems that the hard work or hard experience of something has naturally brought us closer to grief. Just as if life is only happy you tend to become arrogant, it is not joy but sadness that makes us mature and we hope that we will be happy, but sometimes we find happiness through sadness. Because the artist thinks that happiness comes from everyday life, not from some special events. 

It seems the main intention that the artist wants to convey in Life is ART is to give meaning to the value of everyday life to sublimate ordinary mundane life into art, and realize that life is art and art is life.

In this exhibition, the audience will have a chance to feel that they are becoming the art of their lives, and to look back and stay for a while.

Soonji is a promising and up-and-coming artist who is active in painting and installation works. In 2010, she graduated from the School of Visual Arts (New York) in the US with a degree in Fine Arts. She was a four-year undergraduate scholarship student from 2007 to 2010, winning the SVA Portfolio Awards and The Art Institute of Chicago Scholarship in 2007, She has shown her works domestically and overseas at many private exhibitions, special exhibitions, and group exhibitions, including New York Grammery Stack Art Show (2012), Young, New Jersey, and  W Gallery (2014).

Life is ART 삶은 예술이다 展

이상아트스페이스는 2018년 2월 7일 수요일부터 2월 26일 월요일까지 쑨지의 개인전, <삶은 예술이다>展을 개최한다. 이번 전시에서는 평범한 일상의 가치에 의미를 부여한 설치 작품들과 평면으로 그려낸 회화 작품들이 선보인다.

이번 <삶은 예술이다 Life is Art>展을 통해 행복은 특별한 것이 아닌 가까이에 있는 삶에서 온다는 것, 그리고 살아가는 모든 인생은 예술의 한 부분이 될 수 있다는 것을 감상할 수 있는 장을 제공 하고자 한다.

이번 전시에서는 고명도에서 저명도까지 아우르는 다양하고 화려한 색감들과 작가의 독특한 터치로 주목시킬 회화작품과 혼합재료를 사용해 전시공간을 아우르는 설치작품들이 총 6여점 소개될 예정이다.

쑨지의 작업은 과거와 현실, 삶과 죽음, 사계절의 순환 등 여러 가지 감정들이 함께 공존하는 자연의 리듬과 반복되고 변화하는 패턴을 통해반복되는 일상 속에서 그만의 의미를 담아 그림에 연출해 표현했다. 사람들의 릴렉스 라인과 평범한 일상생활을 그리면서 지루하고 평범하게 여겨지는 일상 속에서 낭만과 예술이 존재한다고 느낀다. 가까이에서 보는 현실은 비극일지라도 멀리서 보는 입장에서는 희극이 될 수 있으며, 특별하지 않게 느껴왔던 일상은 세월이 흘러 돌아봤을 때 감성을 자극하는 추억과 아련한 그리움이 되기도 한다는 어쩌면 당연한 인생의 이치를 상기시켜 많은 이들이 공감 할 수 있는 작업이다.

작가는 재빠르게 과거의 행복했던 기억들을 그림으로 편집해 보여준다. 그림으로 본인의 이야기를 하기도 하고 사람들을 보고 느끼는 감성을 그리기도 한다. 때론 사람들의 말이나 얼굴에 표정을 드러내지 않아도 손동작이나 몸짓에서 감정이 표현되어, 사람들이 나타내는 손의 모양이나 몸짓을 보고 개개인이 갖고 있는 여러 심리와 감성을 그린다. 그리고 작품에서 여러 그림들이 겹쳐 하나의 기억처럼 그림이 완성 된다.

쑨지의 작품 속에선 과감하면서도 섬세함이 돋보이는 붓 터치와, 작업 속에 이유한 마음으로 나타낸 것이 드러나 보는 사람의 시선을 흥미롭게 만든다. 작은 행복과 소소함 속에 산다는 것은 자신을 예술 작품으로 만들어내는 것이기 때문이다.

그림에서 주로 보여 지는 블루 컬러는 괴테의 색채연구에서도 파란색이 나타내는 상징성은 다양하다고 했듯이, 안정과 평화의 상징으로 싱그러운 희망의 이미지와 어둡고 우울한 슬픈 이미지를 동시에 보여주는 야누스적 속성을 가지고 있어서, 많은 예술가뿐 아니라 일반인들 또한 선호하며 애정 하는 색상 중 하나이다. 작가는 이처럼 인생 또한 파란색의 보여지는 이미지와 비슷하다고 이야기한다.

모든 기쁜 기억은 슬픈 기억이 있었기에 만들어졌다. 무언가의 어려운 일이나 힘든 경험에서 자연스레 슬픔과 더욱 가까워지게 된 듯하다. 인생이 기쁘기만 하다면 교만해지기도 하듯 우리를 성숙하게 만드는 건 기쁨이 아닌 슬픔이고 행복하기를 바라지만 때론 슬픔을 거쳐 행복을 찾기도 한다. 그 행복은 특별한 것이 아닌 가까이에 있는 삶에서 온다고 생각하기 때문이다.

< Life is Art/삶은 예술이다 >展을 통해 작가가 전하고 싶은 주된 의도는 삶을 주제로 일상의 가치에 의미를 부여하여 평범한 일상들을 예술로 승화시켜, 인생은 예술이며 예술은 인생인 것임을 깨닫게 되는 것이 아닐까.

이번 전시에서 전시장에 들어선 관객들은 각자의 삶의 예술이 된다는 것을 감각하고, 잠시라도 자신의 삶을 돌아보고 머물러 생각 할 수 있는 기회를 가지게 될 것이다.

쑨지는 회화 및 설치 작품 분야에서 활발한 활동을 펼치고 있는 촉망 받는 신진 작가이다. 2010년 미국의 School of visual Arts (뉴욕) 순수미술학과를 졸업했다. 2007년에서 2010년까지 4년간 학부 장학생이었다., 2007년 SVA Portfolio Awards와 The Art Institute of Chicago scholarship의 수상 경력과, 뉴욕Gramercy Stack Art Show (2012년), 뉴저지 Young. W Gallery(2014년) 등 국내 외 다수의 개인전 및 기획전, 그룹전의 전시에서 작품들을 선보인 바 있다.
